RESIDENTS in a Thurrock village have been helped by staff at the local school who have been running a special meals service for elderly and vulnerable people in the community through lockdown.
Horndon on the Hill Primary School is very much a focal point for the local community and has remained opened throughout lockdown, providing educations and daytime accommodation for vulnerable children and children whose parents are key workers.
Staff have worked throughout the crisis period, including the school's kitchen team school cook Chris Skinner came up with the idea of making the most of the time and facilities that were available – but only used for a small number of children.
She asked head Debbie Bradley if the school could operate a local meals service and the idea was enthusiastically agreed – and Tescos and Thurrock CVS offered grants to help fund it. So Chris cooked meals for local residents at the same time as cooking for the children.
The residents' meals were then boxed up in 'meals on wheels' style insulated boxes and Mrs Bradley and Mrs Bray (one of the Senior Leadership Team} then took it in turns to deliver the meals out to the residents on a daily basis. Additional help was kindly provided by local resident, Lisa Hobart, who helped to collect the empty boxes on occasions.
And when the school was closed for Easter and half-term volunteers from the village came in to keep the service going.
