Back in the swing of it. Thurrock's golfers can get on the courses again

GOLF is back and across Thurrock today (Wednesday, 13 May) golfers were once again aiming to go 'straight down the middle'.

Of course strict social distancing rules are in place and only two players at a time are allowed to tee off but at courses across Thurrock – and a driving range – golfers were out and ready to start swinging again.

Thurrock Nub News was out and about and visited St Clere's driving range in Stanford-le-Hope first where professional Jamie Rowland welcomed players who wanted to take a little time out getting used to hitting the ball again.

St Clere's is a much reduced facility these days, but the driving range remains popular, alongside the par three course and footgolf courses.

"To be honest, the courses are not in the greatest shape because we haven't been able to work on them, but they are open at reduced fees of just £5 so hopefully people will be able just to enjoy getting out. It's open just to come along and play – but obviously the usual social distancing guidance applies.

"I am here main to concentrate on coaching and I am not rushing back into that, though hopefully I will be starting next week. I have no doubt I could ring round and get all my clients here today and be busy but we will take it steady and safely and move towards getting back to normal.

Just down the road at Orsett Golf Club, members were arriving to tee off under the watchful eye of captain Gordon Irving and club professional David Wood. Strict measures have been put in place to ensure safety and adherence to the guidelines. The clubhouse itself is not open and the course is open to members only, who have to book and can only play in twos.

"It's nice to be back, there's been a lot of work put in so the course is read and I am delighted we have been able to open the course and we have already booked up the first three days' tee times," said Gordon.

"It will be good to get out on the course again and we look forward to further relaxations so we can all enjoy this great game in the way we are used to."

At Langdon Hills Golf and Country Club members were also teeing off.

Club president Steve Cook – who unfortunately couldn't take part as he is still under a 12 week self-isolation – said the members were delighted to be back.

"I've been involved in getting this going again and how we will work it, even though I've been at home " said Steve. "For the moment it's just members only and they have to book but we are hopeful that towards the end of next week we may be able to open the course up to non members for bookings, possibly after 4pm.

"Whatever happens, it is good for our members to be able to get back on the course."

At Mardyke Golf Club in South Ockendon, members are also back on the course. The club has opened nine holes, which are open to members only and players have to book, turn up ten minutes before tee time and the play.

Impulse Leisure's course at Belhus remains closed.
