THURROCK's three contenders came away empty-handed but highly praised from today's ceremony announcing the winners of the Local Government Information Unit's councillor of year awards run in conjunction with investments manager Churches, Charities and Local Authorities (CCLA).

During a virtual ceremony communities portfolio holder Cllr Deb Huelin was shortlisted as Community champion and featured in a short film featuring her work across the borough – but she lost out to winner Cllr Saima Ashraf from Barking and Dagenham.

"Bold, ballsy and bullish" was the description given to Cllr Shane Hebb who was shortlisted in the category for Finance & Economic Development and while he didn't claim a prize as an individual, his contribution was recognised when the while award was given over to all who have served in local government for their work during the past, difficult year.

Thurrock's third nominee was leader Cllr Rob Gledhill. Viewers were told he has led from the front in transforming the fortunes of Thurrock Council during the past year and he was particularly praised for his efforts in combating anti-social behaviour.

However, he too missed out with Corby's Cllr Tom Beattie taking the top honour of council leader of the year.
