THURROCK Council has assured residents in borough tower blocks that they are safe, despite a report to the authority that recommends action to replace cladding that does not mean building regulations.

Thurrock Nub News reported on a planning application for Kier Hardie House yesterday (Sunday, 7 June) which involves replacing its cladding and making other improvements.

That prompted some expressions of concern by residents, which were answered by Thurrock Council this evening.

The council says: "All residents and leaseholders in the nine tower blocks concerned were sent a letter by Thurrock Council in May that explained what works are set to be undertaken over the next 24 months and why they are necessary.

"Residents were also invited to submit questions via an online portal while face to face meetings are restricted.

"The external wall insulation on a number of the council's tower blocks is due for planned renewal. The external panels on these blocks are now showing expected signs of wear and tear. In addition the fixing system used, while still fulfilling its purpose, is at the end of its anticipated lifespan and is also due for renewal.

"The scheduled refurbishment, which will also provide new windows for every flat and a new roof for each of the blocks, will ensure the council continues to provide quality homes for our residents that meet the latest building regulations introduced.

"Thurrock Council would like to strongly reassure residents that they are safe and we maintain compliance with the Regulatory Reform Order (Fire Safety) 2005, and work constructively with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to ensure our continuing compliance with the order to keep our residents safe.

"The council appreciates that residents will want to be fully informed of the works and will continue to keep them up to date. All planned works will achieve the highest safety standards."

Cllr Barry Johnson, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "We have been really clear that the cladding on the high rise properties is safe and we have worked closely with ECFRS to ensure our residents are protected, this has not changed. These planned works will replace the cladding and fixing system, we will continue to meet high standards of compliance and put the safety of our residents first."
