THURROCK Council has come under fire on social media after its traffic enforcement officers were seen out and about in the borough issuing parking tickets.
Residents have asked if such action is an 'essential service' and day that some local parking areas are crowded with vehicles at a time they wouldn't normally be because people are staying at home.
Thurrock Council was invited by Thurrock Nub News this morning to explain its policy and what has happened but they have declined.
The issues was highlighted by Stanford-le-Hope resident Wayne Tomkins.
He said: "I cannot believe Thurrock Council have parking wardens out right now....
"My girlfriend got a ticket yesterday while unloading shopping - do the council who send out the wardens to work really think it's acceptable right now to issue fines when people are in financial meltdown?!
"Have a heart in the toughest period everyone will ever go through and furlough your parking wardens.
"You are part of the government with massive social responsibility right now, not a rogue cowboy organisation....or at least we hope you're not!"
There has been widespread support for his comments on social media.
In response Thurrock Council would not comment on the issue, effectively saying they are too busy.
Their response to our specific question was: "As you will be very aware, the council is dealing with all the emerging issues in this unprecedented time as a result of coronavirus and are following government guidance in what is a rapidly changing situation.
"The council has committed to providing local media with a daily update highlighting and explaining any changes to public facing council services. These details will be issued proactively in daily updates rather than as responses to individual enquires.
"Thanks for your understanding and for helping us to deliver important public health and safety messages as we respond to this situation."
Last Friday the council said they would issue 'daily information updates to residents'. So far they have issued two.
