Disappointment at the double for borough sides

THERE was double disappointment for borough teams in the Isthmian North Division this evening (Friday, 10 September) as both Grays Athletic and Tilbury went down to defeat.

Grays were looking at the possibility of going top of the table when they travelled to Maldon & Tiptree but found themselves on the back foot after just six minutes when Charlie Hughes opening the scoring for the hosts.

And he added a second seven minutes into the second half to leave new Grays manager Paul Joynes disappointed on his first match in sole charge.

Anointed Chukwu pulled on back for the Blues on 74 minutes but that was as good as it got in front of a healthy crowd of 352.

It was a third win out of three for Maldon but they were denied top spot by Barking, who beat Tilbury 2-1 at home to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season with a fourth win out of four.

For a second consecutive match new Tilbury signing Phil Roberts gave them the lead at Mayesbrook Park with an eleventh minute goal but Barney Williams equalised just two minutes later.

And the winner came on 53 minutes from Kieran Jones.

Tomorrow Aveley, who face Barking in an FA Cup replay at their Parkside ground on Monday, will be at home to Hullbridge Sports in the North Division.

In the Premier Division East Thurrock United make the trip to Worthing.
