EXPECTATIONS that the jury in the trial of Grays woman Cheryl Banks, who has admitted killing her 89-year-old mother, would be able to deliver a murder or manslaughter verdict today (Thursday, 24 February) were thwarted by another overrunning case in Reading.

Since Monday, Basildon Crown Court has been the setting for witnesses and experts giving evidence and being cross examined and the claims and counter claims of prosecution and defence counsel heard by the jury.

This morning, the first part of wrapping up the trial of Mrs Banks - who has admitted killing her mum, Winifred Grover, at their home in Lenmore Avenue last June - was completed as prosecutor Christopher Paxton explained why the Crown believed Mrs Banks should face a charge of murder rather than manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

He reviewed the evidence given over the last three days and reported here on Nub News (See links below).

Defence counsel Ms Tana Adkin was due to complete her summary and final presentation to the jury this afternoon, prior to a summing up by Judge Samantha Leigh. However, Ms Adkins was called to another case in Reading which took priority and so the case was unable to proceed at Basildon.

It is hoped she will complete her speech tomorrow and it may be that a verdict in the case will then be delivered.
