A YOUNG Aveley woman, who celebrated her 21st birthday earlier this week, has been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Courtney-Lee Collins has been awarded a British Empire Medal for her services to the local community.

Former Ockendon Academy student Courtney-Lee is currently in her closing year studying for a law degree but during her studies she has continued to fundraise for a host of charities, including also organising pageants.

She is also the reigning Pure International Miss United Kingdom Sweetheart!

Mum Wendy, from Hall Road, said: "We have known for some time and it's been the hardest secret to keep.

"We are so very proud of Courtney-Lee. She is a wonderful daughter and a very special young lady."

Courtney-Lee added: "I can't quite believe it but I'm so excited and honoured. I'm thrilled to have been given the chance to meet the Queen and other royals at Buckingham Palace.

"I'm honestly still in shock, I've known since earlier this year and it's been the hardest secret I've ever had to keep."

Also honoured, with an OBE is Orsett resident Alexander Campbell, Chief executive of the Queen Victoria Seamen's Rest, for services to charity.

And Stanford-le-Hope man Shaun Edward Childs has been awarded an MBE for services to vulnerable families in East London.
