THERE was a special celebration at Airey Neave Court in Grays today (Saturday, 16 October) to mark the 100th birthday of a woman who has spent all her life in the borough.

Fellow residents, staff, friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of Lilian Smith.

Born in 1921 Lilian grew up in Greyhound Lane, Orsett Heath and attended Orsett Primary School.

Lily, as she is known to all, was a domestic service worker all her working life and married Bill Smith in 1941. He passed in 1992

The birthday girl, who has lived at Airey Neave Court since December 1997, has three daughters, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

This afternoon's part was organised by Thurrock Council sheltered housing officer Elaine Veares and the team at Airy Neave Court.

Elaine said: "What can you say about this remarkable lady? Lily is wonderful and it is so great to be able to celebrate this fantastic day with her family and friends."
