Thurrock Council has announced the return of the SEND and Alternative Provision Awards for 2026, celebrating the remarkable achievements of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and those in Alternative Provision across the borough.

Following the success of last year's inaugural event, the awards are back once again to shine a spotlight on inspirational individuals aged up to 25 who demonstrate resilience, determination, creativity, and progress in their everyday lives.

This year's ceremony will take place in June 2026, which will bring together families, schools, professionals, and community members.

Residents, schools, organisations, and community groups are invited to submit nominations for children and young people who deserve recognition. Nominations are open until Monday 20 April 2026, and multiple nominations for the same individual are welcome.

Nominations can be submitted via the online nomination form.

Award categories for 2026

The seven award categories celebrating a wide range of achievements are:

  • Student of the Year Award – Recognising exceptional commitment to learning.
  • Celebrating Success Beyond School – Honouring achievements in community projects, sports, arts, and other activities outside the classroom.
  • Overcoming Adversity to Access Education – Celebrating individuals who have shown courage and perseverance in continuing their education despite personal or social challenges.
  • Star Supporter – Peers & Siblings Award – Recognising siblings, peers, or friends who provide invaluable support.
  • Preparing for Adulthood Achievement Award – Highlighting young people taking positive steps toward independence, employment, or community involvement.
  • Little Achievers Award (EYFS – Overcoming Challenges to Access Education) – Celebrating our youngest learners who have shown exceptional resilience.
  • Alternative Provision Rising Star Award – Recognising outstanding progress in learning and personal development within alternative provision, with separate awards for primary and secondary students.

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "The SEND and Alternative Provision Awards are a truly special celebration of the incredible strength, perseverance, and achievements of Thurrock's children and young people. Last year's awards showcased some of the most inspiring stories from across our borough, and I am delighted that we are bringing these awards back for 2026."

"If you know an exceptional young person who deserves to have their efforts recognised and celebrated, I really do encourage you to get nominating."
