YOUNG people receiving support from Thurrock Council's Children's Services came together at Grangewaters Outdoor Education Centre recently for an annual 'Young Voices' event.

The day at the leisure facility on Thursday, 30 July brought together a range of young people, particularly those receiving support through the Families First programme, as well as children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), for a day of activities and engagement.

Hosts for the event were Thurrock Young Voices, a collective of young people who are in care or who have come through the council's care process. As well as acting independently and organising support and events for young people in similar circumstances, the group speaks and present regularly at the council's corporate parenting committee - giving personal updates on life in care and the needs of the borough's younger community.

Held on International Day of Friendship, this year's event placed a focus on building positive relationships both with and between young people. Activities throughout the day centred on friendship, teamwork, communication and recognising the importance of healthy, supportive relationships.

The morning session was dedicated to young people with SEND, with Grangewaters closed to the public to help create a calm and welcoming environment. A dedicated sensory space was also available, providing additional support to help neurodivergent young people feel comfortable and relaxed while attending the event.

The event gave young people the chance to meet professionals from a range of council services, learn about the support available to them and take part in activities in a relaxed outdoor setting. It also provided an opportunity for young people to share their views and help shape services designed to support them.

Thurrock Council's Future Shapers, an advisory group of young people that helps shape council services, were also in attendance to support the day.

Cllr Milena Bingley, cabinet member for education, skills and children's services, said: "We're proud of our children's services, and we want every child and young person in Thurrock to feel supported, listened to and empowered to achieve their potential.

"Young Voices provided a fantastic opportunity for young people to build confidence, and learn more about the support available to them.

"Grangewaters is a fantastic space, and it was wonderful that so many young people got involved in the outdoor activities, building new connections and enjoying the opportunity to spend time together."
