A SMALL patch of underused land behind Chadwell Library has been transformed into a community garden thanks to the dedication of local volunteers.

Over the past five years, green-fingered residents have created a flourishing garden that produces a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs for the local community to enjoy.

Working in partnership with the Chadwell in Action group, volunteers and local stakeholders, funding and social value contributions were secured to support a programme of improvements.

This summer, new enhancements include new raised planting beds, accessible growing areas, seating, a new shed, and extensive clearance of overgrown areas.

Cllr George Monk, cabinet member for Deregulation, Efficiency and Civic Pride, said: "Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and social value contributions from companies committed to supporting local communities, the garden has grown into a valued community asset, bringing people together, promoting health and wellbeing, and creating a strong sense of pride in the local area."

The improvements mean new opportunities for residents to get involved in gardening, and social and community events, helping reduce social isolation, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and strengthen community connections.

Volunteer gardener Sanni highlighted the positive impact the garden has had on his life: "Gardening keeps me active, brings me out into the fresh air, and helps me build friendships. There's real joy in growing your own food. It simply tastes better when you've played a part in growing it."

Residents interested in getting involved are invited to join the friendly and growing team of volunteer gardeners. No gardening experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.
