BOROUGH residents are invited to take part in a walking event to be held later this month.

It will take place on Saturday, 23 September from 10am at Hardie Park off Hardie Road in Stanford-le-Hope (SS17 0PB).

Organised and hosted by Thurrock's Dementia Friendly Community group families, loved ones and people living with dementia can all join the walk for free.

The walk is also anopportunity to not just raise funds but also to raise awareness. Anyone who has any questions about dementia is welcome to come along and receive advice and support from the group while they walk.

Pradip Mistry, chair of the Thurrock Dementia Friendly Communities group said: "This is our second Memory Walk in aid of dementia and supporting Alzheimer's Society. This event is open to everyone, every three seconds, someone is diagnosed with dementia in the UK, so it's something that could impact you or your family.

"Come and find out about the support available, what dementia is and share your memories of loved ones as you walk."

The walk starts from 10am at Hardie Park with a Zumba warm up, then two walks starting from 10.30am. One short gentler walk which is more accessible and is around 2km taking in Hardie Park and then a more challenging walk of approximately 7km, which takes in Essex Wildlife Trust and local landmarks. The park has facilities including a café and toilets.

Laura Cleverly who is a Dementia Friendly Communities Co-ordinator for the Alzheimer's Society said: "It's so wonderful that the Thurrock Dementia Friendly Communities group is coming together for a second time to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's Society.

"Every pound they raise will make a huge difference. Each step will help fund faster diagnosis, ongoing support and vital research, helping people with dementia live more fulfilled lives now and in the future. If you need help and support, the Alzheimer's Society has a helpline and other resources which you can access through our website (www.alzheimers.org.uk)."
