The A13 westbound close to Orsett is closed this evening (9pm) following a major crash.

Emergency services are on scene.

A diversion is in place via Blackshots, Lodge Lane and the Treacle Mine, leaving at Orsett Cock and reentering at North Stifford.

A police statement said: "We are currently on scene of a serious collision on the A13.

"Emergency services were called to reports of a collision on the London-bound carriageway just past the Orsett Cock roundabout at around 8.25pm today.

"The road is currently closed and a diversion is in place.

"We are expecting the road to remain shut for some time and are asking the public to avoid the area and plan your journey.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding.

"We also need anyone who saw what happened or who has dash cam footage to contact us.

"Please quote incident 1462 of 20 July.

"You can let us know by submitting a report on our website or by using our online Live Chat service available Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) between 10am-9pm.

"Visit www.essex.police.uk/digital101 to find out more about our website reporting services.

"Alternatively you can call us on 101.

"In an emergency always call 999.
