Another chance to get creative

FOLLOWING the success of a creative activities programme which saw hundreds of residents try something new, people are being invited to shape the future of Thurrock's arts scene.

Local people came out in force for Green Light, a programme organised by Start Thurrock where everything from stage shows and lantern making workshops, to silk batik sessions and smartphone photography classes were on offer in a series of events developed in conjunction with the local community.

Now, there is another opportunity to develop future creative offerings at Start Thurrock's Creative Springs event.

Over recent months, three artists – maker and crafter Joanne Tyler, theatre group Teatro Vivo and arts collective The People Speak – have been devising proposals for creative projects with residents of Chadwell St Mary, Purfleet-on-Thames and South Ockendon.

At Creative Springs, everyone in attendance will have the chance to vote on which ones they want Start Thurrock to help bring to life.

Thurrock residents prepare for a sign writing workshop with artist Hannah 'Disco' Dickins.

All are welcome to South Essex College in Grays on Thursday, 21 Marchto sow the seeds of the creative scene – where there will also be live performances, tasty food and a chance to mix with other people and celebrate the first year of Start Thurrock.

The event will run between 12noon and 2pm, and again from 6pm until 8pm.

Start Thurrock Creative Director Katie Beadle said: "I'd like to thank everyone who attended any of the Green Light workshops and performances, and all those people who gave up their time to make it happen.

"It was incredible to see so many people give something new a go. The artists loved it, and the feedback we've received has been invaluable.

"Now, we are looking forward to Creative Springs and hearing from the people of Thurrock about what they'd like to see brought to life next.

"The artists have been working hard on the proposals, but we want to commission projects which are truly wanted by the community.

"The only way we can do that is if residents attend, and let us know what they'd like to see and be involved in."

Start Thurrock was formed when The Tilbury on the Thames Trust, supported by The Port of Tilbury, in partnership with Thurrock CVS, The Royal Opera House, Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions CIC and Thurrock Council successfully secured funding from Arts Council England's Creative People and Places National Portfolio 2022-25 programme.
