Autumn signals a new start at Yacht Club

By Guest 24th Oct 2021

FOR decades one of the main signs of autumn arriving in Grays has been the arrival of the crane at Thurrock Yacht Club to lift the boats out of the water for wintering ashore.

This year's event on 23 and 24 October provided a grand spectacle for anybody viewing from the sea wall, but it was special for a couple of reasons.

Firstly it signalled the end of the club's diamond jubilee sailing season. Formed in 1946 the club has been in constant operation for 75 years, and despite the challenges of COVID measures, members managed a full racing season to celebrate.

However, possibly more significantly it signals the start of a new era in the club's history. They have acquired a number of boats and members from the clubs who were previously based at Stubbers Activity Centre and are excited to announce that dinghy sailing will become a regular feature at the club starting this autumn and winter.

The club welcomes new and returning sailors to join them, but even for those who don't want venture onto the water, the sight of sails on the river right in town centre must provide a reason to come down to the riverfront to enjoy our most significant natural asset – the Thames.

More information can be found on the club's website.
