MEMBERS of Bulphan WI were full of beans - or at least knowledge of cocoa beans - after a recent meeting.

The group played host to guest speaker Cheryl Brighty from 'Artistry in Cocoa', after seeing an advertisement in Essex WI News, the magazine produced by Essex Federation for its members.

She explained how and where the cocoa beans grow and how they are prepared to eventually become chocolate. An explanation of the process, and a demonstration of tempering chocolate and of making some filled truffles was accompanied by each member having some samples of their own to 'taste test'.

Members also enjoyed a visit by a Bulphan beekeeper who popped in to sell some honey. The recycling and swap table was prominent, and members shared details of their efforts to change their ways and help to reduce global emissions.

And at their most recent meeting, earlier this month, members were entertained by speaker Christine who informed them about some of the history of willow weaving, the different types used for weaving and the preparation needed.

When members got their hands on willow kits enthusiastic weaving resulted in everyone ending up with a tree, each with its own rustic charm, some progressed to making stars. The chatter and laughter were a joy to hear.

In November members will be having a go at making teacup pin cushions, lavender bags using the lavender from the WI flower bed outside the hall and another mystery craft!

A seasonal celebration meal for members only, takes place in December at Langdon Hills Golf Club. Also, on Saturday 4 December, 12 until 3.30pm, the WI will have a stall at the church Christmas bazaar in the village hall, where you'll be able to buy, among other things, willow weaved trees, lavender bags, and teacup pin cushions!

Updates about future meetings, information, photographs, and much more can be found on Facebook via this link and on Twitter @bulphanwi or you can contact the group via secretary Janet McCheyne on 07752836902 or email [email protected]
