DEVELOPERS hoping to build new homes on a busy Stanford-le-Hope road - who were thwarted by Thurrock Council's planning committee chairman's casting vote last October - have come back with a new plan for four homes instead of the original seven.

The controversial scheme on Wharf Road in Stanford-le-Hope was the subject of intense debate when it came before the council's planning committee and it was only chairman Cllr Tom Kelly's decision to back the officer recommendation to refuse that saw the plan eventually thrown out.

Ward councillors Shane Hebb and Terry Piccolo had thrown their weight firmly against the proposal, but it nearly sneaked through after a detailed debate during which there were some intense exchanges between councillors, three of who supported the scheme and three were against, with two absentions. So Cllr Kelly had the final say.

Now a scheme to demolish the existing building at 63 Wharf Road is back before the council, this time to be replaced by four chalet-style bungalows and an access road.
