Borough tribute to heroes of the far east

VETERANS, representatives of military organisations, civic and regional dignitaries and Thurrock residents paid tribute to heroes of the Second World War's Far East campaign today (Saturday, 15 August) at a ceremony marking VJ Day.
Today marks the 81st anniversary of Victory over Japan Day, the surrender of Japanese forces, when combat in the Asia‑Pacific region stopped and World War II effectively ended.
Following a tradition started by Thurrock's Burma Star organisation, a ceremony took place at the Rose Garden in Orsett Village.
Wreaths were laid at the Burma Star memorial, and Rev'd Canon David Rollins, Area Dean of Thurrock, led the service.
