ST Luke's Hospice is seeking volunteer drivers to help patients reach essential appointments at its hospices in Basildon and Thurrock.

Volunteer drivers play an important role at the Hospice, ensuring patients are transported where they need to be safely and comfortably.

The charity is asking volunteer drivers for a minimum of only four hours per week, to collect patients from their own home, nursing or residential home to attend Hospice Wellbeing groups, the In-Patient Unit or Clinical Outpatient appointments, and return the patient home after.

The hours of transportation can vary between 8.30am and 5pm, but hours which suit those interested in the role will be discussed. Use of own vehicle is essential and volunteers each receive a mileage allowance to cover expenses, with training and support provided.

Mike Rawlinson has volunteered with St Luke's Hospice for more than eight years and one of his current roles is as a Volunteer Driver.

"I have volunteered in various roles at the Hospice including volunteer driver.

"I really enjoy meeting people as a volunteer driver and helping them reach their appointments. On numerous occasions patients often express their gratitude for the work of us drivers. Volunteer drivers are just a small part of the wonderful service that St Luke's Hospice offers but it is a privilege to be part of that service."

Chris Bartell, Volunteer Co-Ordinator at St Luke's said: "Our Volunteer Drivers play an important role for our patients and their contribution and help is invaluable to the people that need it most.

"Every day as a volunteer offers a chance to gain valuable experience in our busy environment, meet new people and to brighten someone's day, so please do get in touch if you are able to help in any way."
