By Nub News Reporter 9th Mar 2026
THE flag of the Commonwealth was raised outside Thurrock Council's town hall and civic offices this morning (Monday, 9 March).
The ceremony, to mark Commonwealth Day, was attended by former service personnel, local cadets and dignitaries including council leader Cllr Lynn Worrall and Mayor Cllr Sue Shinnick, who raised the flag.
Mayor's Chaplain, Rev Dr Kate Carter led the service.
Cllr Shinnick said: "We proudly join people across the globe in recognising Commonwealth Day. This year's theme, 'Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth', reminds us of the positive change that can be achieved when all 56 member nations work in partnership.
"Here in Thurrock, that spirit of connection is part of our identity. Our three ports continue to be vital gateways for global trade, with ships and goods arriving from across the Commonwealth every week."
Cllr Worrall said: "As we celebrate Commonwealth Day 2026, we look to the future with the hope that the bonds between all 56 nations remain strong, inclusive and resilient, ensuring no one is left behind."
