GATEWAY 97.8, the community radio station which serves Basildon and East Thurrock, has been shortlisted for two prestigious radio awards.

Gateway, based in Basildon's Eastgate Centre, has been shortlisted in this year's Community Radio Awards.

The station, which won three awards at last year's ceremony, is shortlisted for its efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Director Danny Lawrence, working with the Radio Hub networking group, distributed 15,000 radios across the UK to vulnerable people affected by coronavirus.

The station is also shortlisted for its coronavirus coverage. Political Editor Johnny Jenkins aired a daily Coronavirus update every evening for 18 months.

Mr Lawrence said: "Whilst everyone stayed at home, we went out and distributed thousands of radios across the UK. Thanks to everyone who has supported the project!"

Mr Jenkins said: "After our success at last year's ceremony, I am pleased to have been recognised again. Fingers crossed for the awards night next month!

The 2021 Community Radio Awards ceremony takes place in Coventry next month.
