Competition call to young cooks

A BOROUGH-wide competition has been launched to showcase the talents of young cooks in Thurrock.
The Chop Shop Butchery in Corringham has launched the Thurrock Young Chefs competition - a fun and inspiring cooking contest designed to celebrate and encourage the culinary talents of young people in the area.
This initiative invites local children and teens with a passion for food to step into the spotlight and showcase their skills in the kitchen or on the BBQ.
"We're passionate about great food and believe in inspiring the next generation of cooks," said the Chop Shop's Sue Gough. "This competition is all about getting young people engaged, feeling creative and confident in the kitchen — while having lots of fun along the way.
"Whether you're a budding chef or an enthusiastic home cook, this is your moment to shine."
The challenge is to create and cook an original recipe at home (adult supervision encouraged). Then, submit your entry with a short video (2-3 minutes) of cooking and presenting the dish or a photograph of the finished result.
A written version of the recipe and a few lines explaining their inspiration should be included.
Sue adds: "This is your chance to shine in the kitchen, have fun, and share your love for food. Good luck, young chefs - we can't wait to see what you cook up!
"Not only will you gain the title for Thurrock Young Chefs 2025, but you will also receive £150 of gift vouchers to spend at The Chop Shop Butchery and £50 worth of foodie goodies. The competition is open to two age categories mini chef (age 5-10 years) and junior chef (age 11-16 years).
"The judging panel will include chefs and cooks alike from local restaurants and businesses, bringing their expertise and passion for food to the panel."
Entries close Monday 25th August, with the winner to be announced on Saturday, 30 August.
