Construction company pledge improvements in noise management when work begins on port's new berth later this month

RESIDENTS in Stanford-le-Hope, Corringham and Fobbing – and even some as far away as East Tilbury - have been alerted to the beginning of construction work on DP World London Gateway Port's new berth five later this month.
Berth four opened in November 2024 but not before many residents in the East Thurrock area complained about the noise of piling at the port, which lasted for many months, going back to early 2023.
The port and construction company apologised and pledged that when berth five was constructed they would make improvements and the work would be confined to appropriate hours.
That work will shortly commence and in a statement, the appointed construction company have laid down how they will work.
McLaughlin & Harvey is due to commence work on the berth later this month.

It says: "A key and critical element of these works is the construction of the new quay wall. These works involve the installation of steel tubular piles through a combination of vibratory hammer and impact hammer piling techniques.
"This package of works is due to commence on-site approximately mid-August 2025 and run for a period of approximately 18 months, depending on factors such as tide times and weather conditions.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works and your patience is appreciated.
"Throughout these works McLaughlin & Harvey will make every effort to minimise noise and disruption and carry out works in compliance with all statutory consents.
Direct measures to mitigate against the noise generated from the piling works include:
• A non-metallic pad being used between the hammer and head of the pile.
• No more than six cumulative hours of hammering in each 24-hour day.
• Marine pile driving must not take place between the hours of 21:00 and 07:00.
• Piling will not start at weekends until 08:00 Saturday and 10:00 Sunday until 21:00.
• Noise monitors set up inside and outside the site boundary to continuously monitor and record noise levels to ensure compliance with the Section 61 limits set by the local authority.
"Should you have any concerns about these works, please don't hesitate to contact our site contact number on 07771345744 or through our project email address: [email protected]."
