THURROCK Council has highlighted a new service is is supporting, meaning residents looking for care, support and community services can now access a new online directory bringing together more than 140 local micro-enterprises in one place.

A statement from the council says: "Many of us could benefit from a little bit of extra help in our lives from time to time, possibly because we are older, have a disability, are living with a long-term health condition or other personal circumstances.

"Micro-enterprises can help address the needs of people at a very local level, as the services are managed and run by people in our local communities.

"Micro-enterprises, sometimes known as Community Enterprises, are usually small independent organisations, not managed by the council, that focus on helping people maintain their independence and wellbeing. It could be support with cleaning, gardening or shopping, companionship or even personal care.

"Their structure means they can offer imaginative, community-focused services that help people in their day-to-day lives.

"Anyone can access and use a micro-enterprise. Services can be paid for privately, through a Direct Payment, or via a Personal Health Budget. Some activities and services are free of charge, such as community clubs and café mornings.

"The Thurrock Community Micro-enterprise Scheme, a project delivered in partnership between Thurrock Council and national organisation, Community Catalysts, supports local people to set up micro-enterprises across the borough."

Cllr Rob Willoughby, portfolio holder for adult health & housing services, said: "Micro-enterprises are often the unsung heroes in community support. Being small and locally-run, they have great knowledge of their area and their people. They can offer solutions that get right to the heart of what local people need day-to-day to maintain their independence. With this Directory people will only need to go to one place to find a whole range of services that could be of great help to them"

The new directory is available on the Thurrock Council website at thurrock.gov.uk/community-enterprises-for-care-and-support/supporting-local-people. It brings together all the current micro-enterprises in Thurrock in a single easy-to-use resource.

More than 140 micro-enterprises are currently featured, offering more than 20 different types of services to support people in their local communities.

The council concludes: "This directory offers people more choice in finding a personal, local care or support service that suits their individual needs."
