THURROCK Council is talking to residents and wants public opinion on proposals to develop two of its sites for housing.

The council is seeking feedback on two housing schemes – one that would provide seven new houses and one that would see the council sell land to commercial developers - with guidelines to create 53 new homes.

The social housing project is planned for Lyndhurst Road in Corringham, a council-owned site currently occupied by 67 underused garages, which the council believes could be re-developed into seven affordable council homes comprising two-bedroom and three-bedroom houses.

And the council has rehashed previous plans to develop the Darnley Road and Crown Road car park site in Grays. The council which owns the land, has already canvassed local opinion via an earlier consultation and has brought back amended plans for 53 homes which would be sold.

Cllr Luke Spillman, cabinet member for housing, said: "Here we have two sites in Grays and Stanford-le-Hope that are underused and offer the potential to house Thurrock residents and meet current housing demand.

"We have listened to previous views on the Darnley Road and Crown Road site and have updated our latest plans to propose 53 new homes instead of 57, two new buildings rather than three and a reduction in height to one of the buildings.

"The Lyndhurst Road scheme is still at an early stage and your feedback will help to build upon and develop our initial ideas, which will be reflected should these ideas progress to a planning application.

"In both proposals we have reflected a need for parking provision and open green spaces for residents to enjoy, which is a trend we continue to acknowledge that our residents want and need.

"Everyone should have access to a good quality home. We are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to unlock housing delivery and provide high-quality homes for our residents."

Residents can provide their feedback on Darnley Road at a drop-in session on Tuesday, 21 February at The Community House, Seabrooke Rise, in New Road, Grays, from 3pm to 7pm. A drop-in session for the Lyndhurst Road development will be held on Wednesday, 22 February at Impulse Leisure Centre, Springhouse Road, Corringham, from 3.30pm to 7pm.
