THURROCK library users have again been reassured that changes implemented across Essex will not applied to local services.

Libraries in the borough are not included in a decision by Essex County Council to bring in a new £1.15 charge for each book readers take out - something which campaigners across the wider county say is "unfair."

A protest group, Save Our Libraries Essex (SOLE), has started a petition, against the costs and within hours, more than 1,000 people had signed it. The group says this reflects the "anger" users feel about the costs.

However, Thurrock libraries are run locally.

A statement from Thurrock Council today (Wednesday, 29 April) says: "Thurrock Libraries would like to reassure customers that there is no charge for reserving items for members of the Thurrock Library Service or for residents using our libraries.

"Recent changes announced by Essex Libraries regarding reservation charges do not apply to Thurrock Libraries. Essex Libraries are administered by Essex County Council, whereas Thurrock Libraries are operated by Thurrock Council and remain a separate service."
