FIFTEEN firefighters worked quickly to attack a field fire, believed locally to have been started deliberately, in Tilbury this afternoon.

The fire, in a field accessed by Biggin Lane, was tackled by crews after an alert was raised at 1.40pm.

It was started in a triangular portion of the arable land close to Tilbury Manor Junior School which is between Fort Road to the east and St Chads Road and Feenan Highway to the west.

The flames covered around two hectares of the bigger field, which had been harvested, leaving just stubble to burn.

Crews tackled the flames using a specialist vehicle.

At 4pm Essex Fire and Rescue reported one engine remained at the scene to check for hot spots but was not planning to stay much longer.
