Disappointment as red flag is brought down on popular Thurrock karting venue

GO-Kart enthusiasts have spoken of their disappointment after a popular track that has hosted racing for almost quarter of a century announced it is to close next month.
Lakeside Karting, located on the A1306 Arterial Road, West Thurrock, has announced it will close on Wednesday, 23 September.
The track opened in September 2002 and is widely regarded as one of the top outdoor tracks.
No reason has been given for the closure, but the common belief is that the site will be swallowed up by Google's controversial plans for a huge new data centre, recently backed by Thurrock Council leader Cllr Richard Bingley.
A spokesman for Lakeside Karting said: "After a lot of years, a lot of laps and a lot of memories, it's time for us to share some sad news.
"Lakeside Karting will be closing its doors on 23rd September.
"It's a strange thing to write.
"We've watched thousands of you come through the gates over the years: first-time drivers, families, birthday groups, mates taking things far too seriously, regulars chasing another tenth and some seriously quick racers."
The team said they want to spend the final few weeks doing what they do best— racing — and have invited past visitors to return for one last lap.
"If Lakeside has been part of your life at any point, we'd love to see you back at the track before we close.
"Get the old group together, dig out the lap time excuses and come give the place a proper send off."
The news has been met with disappointment across social media, with many expressing their dismay on Lakeside Karting's Facebook page.
