FLOODWATER running off adjacent fields caused significant problems for motorists on a busy link road in the east of the borough this afternoon (Tuesday, 12 March).

After a morning of incessant rain, water began to flow across Southend Road (the B1420) early in the afternoon and reached a depth of more than a foot at some points along a stretch of about 80 yards.

Water than ran into the driveway of an adjacent house, though it stopped short of the building.

The scene on the B1420.

The point of the flood is on the approach to the Five Bells roundabout.

At least eight vehicles became stuck in the water and had to be towed and and transported away by lorry. A local recovery firm placed a vehicle by the roadside to organise and co-ordinate rescues.

Recovery vehicles were called in to take some cars and vans away after they failed to start after being pulled from the water.
