Essex Freemasons have been formally added to the Thurrock Town Hall Roll of Honour, a prestigious civic recognition presented by the Mayor of Thurrock in acknowledgement of the organisation's continued community and charitable work across the borough.

The honour recognises Essex Freemasons' ongoing commitment to supporting disadvantaged children, vulnerable adults, elderly residents, and families facing financial hardship, as well as their wider efforts to tackle homelessness, food poverty, and social isolation throughout the local community.

The award was accepted by Essex Freemasons Peter Hollingsworth and David Barton, reflecting the significant and lasting impact Freemasonry continues to have across Thurrock and Essex.

A major part of this work has been delivered through recent Masonic initiatives, where Friends of Essex and London Homeless, FOELH, received a £100,000 support package.

This included a brand-new outreach van, fully insured and maintained for two years, alongside thermal food bags and volunteer training. This support has significantly expanded the reach of frontline homeless services, helping volunteers support rough sleepers and vulnerable people across Essex and London.

The impact is equally visible at Purfleet Pantry, a volunteer-led community hub where Essex Freemasons provided both financial and practical support. A £5,000 donation, combined with hands-on volunteer involvement, is helping to transform the facility into a vital local resource where families can access affordable food, and practical support during difficult times.

To mark this contribution, a commemorative plaque was recently unveiled at the site.

Further support has also been delivered through the Essex Cornerstone Foundation and the Cross Keys Community Fund, particularly through winter warmth initiatives providing essential supplies and warmth packs to elderly and isolated residents struggling with rising living costs.

These projects ensure support reaches real people facing real hardship, whether helping a family put food on the table, supporting a vulnerable person off the streets, or ensuring older residents are not left isolated and without help.

Peter Hollingsworth said: "This recognition is a proud moment for Essex Freemasons and a powerful reflection of what Freemasonry truly stands for. Supporting our communities, especially those facing hardship, vulnerability, and disadvantage, is at the very heart of our purpose. Service, compassion, and responsibility must always remain the foundation of who we are."

Mr Barton added: "This honour is not about one person or one project, it represents a collective commitment from Essex Freemasons to stand beside the people who need support most. Whether it is helping families facing food poverty, supporting homeless outreach, or ensuring elderly residents are not forgotten, our role is simple, to be visible, to be useful, and to make a lasting difference.
