FAMILIES across Thurrock can access a range of early learning programmes designed to strengthen their child's communication, language and early numeracy skills. 

Thurrock's Family Hubs are offering evidence-based programmes such as Early Words Together and Peep Learning Together (PEEP), which help parents and carers feel more confident supporting their child's development through simple, everyday activities like talking, playing and sharing books. 

During the sessions, families are encouraged to try a variety of fun, at‑home activities, from pairing socks and reading ingredient labels together, to pointing out signs during a walk and exploring different sounds around the house. 

Working closely with the Home Learning Environment Facilitator, families taking part have reported noticeable improvements in their children's confidence and communication. 

One parent said: "My son has started paying attention to me. Before, he would get distracted, but now if I ask him to pay attention he listens and tries to play with me, rather than playing alone." 

Another parent added: "Since starting the sessions, my daughter has come on leaps and bounds with her talking. It's like something clicked — suddenly she's really getting it." 

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Community Safety, said: "There is so much for parents to think about when raising a young child, and it's normal to worry if they're developing quickly enough. I'm pleased that our Family Hubs offer welcoming spaces where parents and carers can get support, have a chat and access helpful information. 

"If you'd like support with your child's communication, literacy or early maths skills, I would really recommend booking onto our Home Learning Environment programme. It's a great opportunity to learn simple, low‑cost ideas, and meet other parents who are experiencing similar things."
