SPECIALIST firefighters were called in to save a horse that had become trapped in icy water in Thurrock.

The rescue took place yesterday morning (Monday, 29 November) on land off Churchill Road in Little Thurrock, Grays, where the horse has slipped down the back into the drainage ditch that runs between houses on the estate.

Essex Fire and Rescue's animal rescue unit from Chelmsford waded into the waist height water and guided the horse to the verge where crews and its owner lifted it to safety.

The horse was left in the care of its owner.
