FIREFIGHTERS were called out to tackle an unusual blaze this evening (Tuesday, 18 February).

They were called to an 80 foot tree on land adjacent to East Thurrock United's football ground on Rookery Hill.

The flames had engulfed the base of the tree and were working their way upwards about ten feet into the lower branches.

It took some time for the crew to work out how to access the field but eventually they were able to get close enough via Vincent Close to stretch a hose and once they had water on the scene the flames were quickly extinguished.

There was significant damage to the tree which may have to be pulled down for safety.

It is not known yet how the fire started. A brigade spokesperson said: "Both accidental and deliberate are possible causes of the fire."
