Free courses to help older Thurrock residents prevent falls and stay independent

By Nub News Reporter   3rd Oct 2025

A NEW programme of free physical activity courses is launching in Thurrock to help adults stay independent and reduce the risk of serious illnesses associated with falls.

The programme, which is backed by NHS Mid & Sth Essex Integrated Care Board, Thurrock Council and Impulse Leisure, launches as recent data shows that more than seven out of 10 falls-related emergency admissions for Thurrock residents last year were for residents aged 65 or older.

Physical activity is well-recognised as a way to help prevent falls and also help those living with long term health issues to manage their conditions.

With almost 30% of the Thurrock population living with multiple chronic health conditions and an average of 86 emergency admissions for a fall each month for Thurrock residents aged 65 or more, two new programmes will help Thurrock residents improve their health and age well.

From October 2025, Thurrock residents can access:

The Strength and Balance (FaME) programme: a 36-week, evidence-based course led by qualified Postural Stability Instructors. It is designed for older adults who have experienced a fall or feel unsteady on their feet. Sessions are held in small groups to help build confidence and community.

The Exercise on Referral (EOR) programme: a 12-week course supporting people with long-term conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and arthritis to become more active.

Local health leaders are encouraging older residents and those living with long term health conditions to sign up to help improve their wellbeing and support them to stay steady and independent.

Dr Matthew Sweeting, Executive Medical Director and Consultant Geriatrician at NHS Mid and South Essex said, "We know gentle physical activity and exercise not only helps to improve our physical and mental wellbeing, but it also helps people living with a long-term illness to manage symptoms related to their condition.

"These new classes are designed to help Thurrock residents with different health conditions keep independent, build strength, regain confidence, and stay active in everyday life."

Cllr Mark Hooper, Thurrock Council's Cabinet member for Health and Well-being, said: "Falls pose a real risk to a great many people, especially older people. If you are not steady on your feet it can have a real impact on your life and really limit how independently you live. These courses will help you stay steady on your feet and keep active to retain your independence.

"Not only will you learn new techniques and improve your strength and balance, you will also boost your confidence in moving around to not only be safer, but feel more self-assured in your balance and movement. On top of that they are a fun social experience that will give you a chance to meet others and learn from experts."

Karl Hayes, Managing Director of Impulse Leisure said "Impulse Leisure is extremely proud to be collaborating with the NHS to deliver strength a balance courses for the residents of Thurrock to reduce the risk and number of falls in our older population. We believe that staying active is key to living well—especially as we age or manage long-term health conditions. Being part of these programmes allows us to directly support our community's wellbeing, helping residents build strength, confidence, and independence. It's not just about fitness—it's about enabling people to live fuller, safer lives." More information on the classes is available at Thurrock Stronger for Longer: Stay Active and Confident – Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System

The programmes are being delivered by Impulse Leisure in partnership with NHS Mid and South Essex ICB and Thurrock Council. They form part of the Thurrock Stronger for Longer campaign, helping local residents stay active, confident and connected.

More information on the classes is available at Thurrock Stronger for Longer: Stay Active and Confident – Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.

To take part in either programme Thurrock residents can call 01375 375533 (option 4) or to speak their GP or health professional for a referral.

Both courses are open to all Thurrock residents aged 18+
