EAST Thurrock MP Stephen Metcalfe has welcomed a government grant of £83,000 for improvements to Corringham's swimming pool.

Mr Metcalfe has praised the launch of the government's Swimming Pool Support Fund which will bring about the major handout to pool operators Impulse Leisure.

Over recent months, the operating costs of swimming pools and leisure facilities have increased considerably, increasing risks of closure or service reduction.

However, the Conservative government says it believes it is right to help offset the cost, a move applauded by the borough MP.

Mr Metcalfe said: "I know that our local pools are essential for young swimmers who are just starting out, as well as adults who are keeping up their fitness. They are community hubs.

"I also understand that swimming pools have struggled over recent months as operating costs have increased.

"Therefore, I absolutely welcome the investment of over £83k for Impulse Leisure in Corringham, and the further £20 million for swimming pools across England."

Sports minister Stuart Andrew said: "Leisure centres and pools are vital for millions of people to stay fit and healthy, and we know that many public swimming pools are experiencing greater pressure due to increased operating costs.

"We have heard their concerns and have stepped in to help them make ends meet."
