A MAN who deliberately ran over a woman outside the Amazon distribution centre in Tilbury has been given an indefinite hospital order.

Afrax Ahmed, 30, of Peartree Way, Greenwich had driven to the site in Windrush Road on 12 July last year where, at around 9.35am, he ran over a woman, seriously injuring her. Police also received reports another woman had also been assaulted.

They were both taken to hospital.

Ahmed was arrested at the scene and while in custody assaulted an emergency worker. He was later charged and at Basildon Crown Court on 29 March he admitted attempted murder and assaulting an emergency worker.

He also previously admitted ABH in connection with the assault on the other woman.

At his sentencing hearing at the same court yesterday (Thursday, 6 May), the court heard he held the delusional belief that he was being persecuted by Amazon.

The court also heard how he had since been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He was made subject of an indefinite hospital order.

He was also banned from driving for five years for failing to provide a specimen and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Emma Barnes said: "Afrax Ahmed knowingly ran over the victim, intending to do her serious harm.

"The injuries the victim sustained were serious and continue to have an ongoing impact on her life.

"And not only this, but the mental impact of this incident on her will be long-lasting.

"I hope this result, signalling the conclusion of the court process, will help her to move forward."
