Inquest opened and suspended as probe continues into death of five-year-old Lincoln

AN inquest has been opened and suspended this morning (Wednesday, 15 January) into the death of five-year-old Lincoln Button at his home in Windstar Drive, South Ockendon, before Christmas. 

At Essex Coroner's Court in Chelmsford the following statement was read: "On 15 December, 2024 Lincoln John Button was found at home unresponsive.

"An ambulance was called and paramedics arrived.

"Despite all efforts he did not survive. 

"Police attended and an investigation was commenced. 

"A forensic post mortem examination took place on 20 December at Great Ormond Street Hospital by Dr Nat Carey and Dr Liina Palm who gave the cause of death as undetermined. 

"The case is being investigated by the Crown Prosecution Service and a third party has been charged."

Coroner Sonia Hat=yes determined that: "The inquest is suspended."

The 'third party' is Lincoln's mother, 35-year-old Claire Button who, after treatment in hospital following the incident, has appeared in court charged with murder and has been remanded in custody while the investigation continues.

And a fundraising appeal has been launched to help with the cost of Lincoln's funeral. It has raised £8,177, surpassing the target £5,000 target. Donations are now suspended. 

The appeal was set up by Jamie Warren, cousin of Lincoln's father Nicky, who gave full approval to the appeal.

Lincoln's family also paid tribute to Lincoln, who attended Bonnygate Primary School.
