A SIX-year-old Thurrock youngster has been honoured by the Royal British Legion for his fundraising efforts.

For the second year running Logan McCarthy, a pupil at Chadwell Primary School, has organised a raffle to raise funds for the Legion.

Last year, with the prize of a poppy cake baked and decorated by mum Nicola of Oxford Avenue, Chadwell St Mary, Logan raised just over £200 and this year - with more of his mum's baking at stake - a raffle for cup cakes raised £250.

Nicola says Logan was inspired to do something when he saw stories about veterans and pictures of the First World War battlefields and old soldiers on TV.

"He said it was important to help and he came up with the idea of organising the competition to make money. I was only too pleased to help him," she said.

Chairman of Grays Thurrock Royal British Legion, Rod Oakley, visited the McCarthy home in Chadwell St Mary to make a presentation of a special certificate acknowledging young Logan's efforts.

"He is amazing and a very special young man. We are so grateful to him and his family for what they have done and showing so much respect for the armed services," said Mr Oakley.
