THE 100th birthday of borough resident Mary Flukes was celebrated at Headon Hall in Stifford Clays, Grays this afternoon (Monday, 27 November).

Mary moved to Thurrock from London several decades ago to be closer to her family following the death of her husband and has proved to be a popular and much-loved member of the Stifford Clays community, where she liveds in sheltered housing in Chafford Way.

Borough deputy Mayor Cllr Qaisar Abbas attended this afternoon's celebration at the venue on Crawford Way to pay tribute and pass on civic congratulations as Mary's card from King Charles took pride of place among the many messages.

Also present was ward councillor Mark Hooper.

Sheltered housing manager Sam Edward was among several guests who presented flowers and presents to Mary, who a day earlier had enjoyed a surprise dinner with family, friends and nightbours at the George and Dragon pub to mark her pending birthday.

Mary was delighted with her rug from local knitters.

Another treasured gift was a special rug made by Headon Hall's group of knitters.

The food for today's celebration was donated by Morrisons.
