EAST Thurrock's new MP James McMurdock has made his first high profile intervention into borough affairs, writing to Thurrock Council leader John Kent asking for answers to questions about Stanford-le-Hope rail station.

The station redevelopment has been a running sore in Stanford for several years after massively busting its budget and it remains unfinished – with little prospect of work being picked up in the short term.

Indeed consideration is bring given to simply reinstating demolished buildings and possibly abandoning plans for a transport interchange.

In a press release, where Mr McMurdock's press officer Llyr Powell consistently spelled his name wrong – and referred to the project as involving a 'training station' – the Reform MP called on Cllr Kent to give him a detailed outline of plans.

The error-strewn release from James McMurdock's office.

He said: "I am writing to highlight concerns raised to me regarding the ongoing delays, rising costs, and management challenges associated with the construction of the new Stanford-le-Hope station.

"This project is of great importance to our community, and the setbacks have understandably caused frustration among residents.

"It is particularly concerning that, following the demolition of the old station in 2020, there does not appear to have been a comprehensive plan for alternative arrangements during the construction period. This lack of a temporary solution has led to significant inconvenience for commuters and local businesses, raising questions about the planning and oversight of the project.

"I understand that approximately £13.4 million has been spent to date, out of a total budget of £29 million. Moreover, with Thurrock Council contributing £17.2 million as the largest financial supporter, it is crucial that we receive clarity on the utilisation of these funds and the current status of the project.

"Since your election as Leader of Thurrock Council in May, I would appreciate hearing about any specific plans or strategies you have put in place to address the challenges associated with this project. A detailed update on the current position of the Stanford-le-Hope station project would be very helpful.

"Specifically, I would welcome information on the expected timeline for the completion of the works and any actions being taken to mitigate the issues that have led to the delays.

"The taxpayers of Thurrock have a right to transparency and accountability regarding the allocation of public funds, and I trust you share this commitment."
