TEARS flowed at an emotional ceremony as a tribute to the late Peter Hewitt MBE, 'Mr Tilbury' to many in the Thurrock town, was unveiled by his widow today (Friday, 9 October).

A plaque commemorating the work of Peter has been placed on the Civic Centre close to the town's war memorial and was dedicated by Mrs Irene Hewitt who thanked everyone in the town for their care, concern and tribute to the man described as the architect of many of the community organisations in Tilbury.

Tribute was played by another town stalwart and Tilbury Riverside Project member Les Morgan, who said so many in the town owed a great deal to his foresight and hard work for the local community.

The Tilbury Riverside Project was founded in 1992 by Peter to promote economic, social and environmental regeneration in Tilbury.

Among one of the many projects it has supported is the provision of annual Christmas lights in the town and Mr Morgan confirmed that while the traditional switching on ceremony was unlikely to take place, the lights will be shining brightly in the town this Christmas.
