Play event proved popular and beneficial

ALMOST 100 parents, carers and children were in attendance for an event in Thurrock to help prepare for starting school or nursery.

On Saturday, 7 June, Thurrock Council hosted a 'Day of fun with your little one'. The free event offered parents and carers the chance to get practical advice and learn fun play activities that encouraged problem-solving, exploration and shared play to build foundations for future learning at home.

As part of the fun, children had the chance to take part in a range of practical play activities that could be recreated at home for little to no cost. Activities included den-building, stacking towers, singing songs, drawing and creating magic potions.

The event was supported by award-winning trainer, Ben Kingston-Hughes, who delivered workshops on how play can be used to support children's development, confidence, and future learning.

A range of local organisations were in attendance to offer help and information on topics such as wellbeing, early years entitlements, holiday activities and adult learning opportunities.

One parent in attendance said: "Me and my family have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, it was amazing to see so many children and families come together and create such a positive atmosphere."

Another parent said: "My child is non-verbal and loves construction toys and has been completely engrossed in today".

Cllr Steve Liddiard, Deputy Mayor of Thurrock, who came along to the event to meet with parents and carers, said: "It was fantastic to see so many parents, carers and children coming down to South Essex College on a Saturday to learn practical advice on preparing for school or nursery.

"All of the attendees looked fascinated by the activities that were put on and I'm sure many of them will be using the learnings from the workshops in their day-to-day lives."

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, cabinet member for Children's Services, Education and Community Safety, said: "Starting school is a big milestone and it may feel like a daunting step to make, but this event was a fantastic opportunity to help parents and carers get their child ready for the classroom.

"I would like to thank all of the local organisations and partners that came along to support the event. Thanks to the engaging workshops and activities that were on offer we have been able to share some practical ways to support children's early development through play."
