THE closure has been announced of a popular Thurrock leisure venue.

Like all Thurrock licenced premises, Riley's Snooker Club on Clarence Road, Grays, was closed during lockdown but, when guidance rules were relaxed earlier this month it remained closed, while some other clubs in the chain reopened.

And now it has been confirmed the club will be closed for good.

A statement from Riley's says: "Just an announcement to say that our Grays branch will not be re-opening.

"It's sad to see our doors close but from all staff here at Riley's we would like to say a massive thank you to all customers we've had over the years.

"We have all had great laughs and have made some great memories that we will cherish forever.

"We wish nothing but great health and happiness for you all. Keep safe and best wishes to you all."

Club users have greeted the news with sorrow.

Among them Steve Dillgaffe Gill said: "I am gutted. Have been playing at Grays from being a teenager to the present and had great times with great people and excellent staff", while Steve Macmillan added: "Proper snooker and pool rooms and great staff. That place will be greatly missed by all in Thurrock."
