PROTESTERS on the M25 just north of the QEII bridge and tunnels have caused huge congestion this afternoon in both directions.

Campaigners from the Just Stop Oil group are demonstrating on the gantry above the road, according to police.

Essex Police have tweeted a statement, saying: "The M25 in Thurrock between J30 and J31 has been closed while we respond to reports of people on the gantry above the road.

"We're working to resolve the incident as quickly and safely as possible but please avoid the area. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

"There are long delays on the M25 back into Essex through Thurrock, with congestion currently backed up to Junction 29 (Upminster)."

Traffic is also backing up on the A13 and adjacent roads.
