RESIDENTS in Little Thurrock have spoken of their shock and disappointment after two sheds on an allotment were broken into and set alight, others were entered and items stolen and some of the allotments were damaged.

Among the items stolen were a treasured penknife with sentimental value belonging to an elderly gardener. His granddaughter, Chloe May Leadbetter, said: "It has really hit my heart. I don't know why someone would do this to them."

The raids and fires, which were dealt with by Essex Fire and Rescue Service, happened on Thursday (12 November) evening on the allotments at the end of Rosedale Road in Grays.

Essex Police are investigating.
