Remembrance theme to next walking event at Coalhouse Fort

AN estimated 240 people have taken part in guided walks this year at Coalhouse Fort, exploring the historic military landscape and its remarkable wildlife - and the next one has an appropriate Remembrance theme.
The next walk takes place Thursday, 19 November, starting at 11am, and will include the St Catherine's Church yard where there is a Commonwealth War Grave Commission headstone from the First World War, for Battery Sergeant Major Robert Currie.
Walkers will also visit the World War One memorial built into the church tower. The event, which will last around 90 minutes, includes visiting the park and culminates inside the fort.
As well as the Coalhouse Fort's historic significance, it is surrounded by nationally and internationally important habitats and wildlife. It is home to rare bumble bees, butterflies, water voles, wading birds, reptiles and birds of prey.
Kevin Diver, Engagement Officer, Coalhouse Fort, who organised the events, said: "Visitors have been guided through the park and given an insight into the rich variety of habitats that are supported at the fort. The land immediately north of Coalhouse Fort forms part of an important, protected area. This designation helps protect the wildlife and habitats for future generations."
During the October half term, many families visited the Fort to take part in creative writing and art workshops, organised by Start Thurrock.
Cllr George Monk, Cabinet Member for Heritage and Culture, said: "Coalhouse Fort is a unique place where history and nature come together. These guided walks help bring the stories of the fort and those who served here to life, while also showcasing the internationally important habitats and wildlife that make the area so special."
The walk is free to join. No booking required, visitors just need to turn up at 11am and gather outside the fort gates, near the café.
The walks are made possible through the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund: Reanimating Coalhouse Fort Project.
