A 16-year-old from Purfleet, who cannot be named becasue of his age, has been sentenced following an investigation into an incident at Lakeside Shopping Centre last summer.
On Tuesday (17 February), the teen appeared at Southend Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and a public order offence. These charges relate to an incident in July 2025 in which a group of young people were chased through Lakeside shopping centre at knifepoint.
He pleaded guilty to both offences and has now received a nine‑month Youth Referral Order and been ordered to pay £136 in court costs.
A statement from Essex Police said: "Thanks to the work of your neighbourhood police officers, everyone involved in the incident was identified quickly, allowing the case to be brought before the courts. The outcome focuses on helping this young person make more positive choices and preventing further offending.
