A 17-year-old gang member from Grays has been locked up after breaching the conditions of his release on bail while awaiting a charge of attempted murder.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, posted videos and information onto social media in breach of the terms of his bail.

He was arrested on 12 May and has been remanded to youth detention accommodation until his appearance at Crown Court.

Basildon Magistrates' Court heard that the reason for the defendant being put into was the nature and seriousness of the original offence, gang affiliation and the risk of reprisal.

In addition it was judged that in the current pandemic climate there was no reason to be outside of his home and in a designated exclusion zone.

The court heard only imprisonment would be adequate to protect the public from death or serious injury occasioned by further offending and to prevent the commission of further imprisonable offences.

If found guilty of attempted murder he faces more than 14 years imprisonment.
