AFTER saying relatively little about the consequences of coronavirus across the borough over recent days Thurrock Council has now committed to making daily information releases.

In its first statement it announces the closure of the Thameside Theatre - some several hours after groups due to perform there, including TOPs, Thurrock Scouts and Thurrock Courts Players has already made announcements cancelling their shows.

This evening's council statement reads: "Thurrock Council continues to follow national Government guidance and expert public health advice while putting business continuity plans into place to ensure that critical services are delivered whilst still adhering to clear advice on social distancing.

"In reviewing the new national government guidance which was issued yesterday evening (Monday, 16 March), the council can confirm that from Wednesday, 18 March, the Thameside Theatre will be closed and all performances cancelled. In addition, and also in line with advice from governing bodies in sport, the council sports pitches will not be available to book. These decisions will be subject to review as the advice and situation changes.

"Any further changes made in the coming days to other services the council provides will be communicated via the council's website and social media channels as well as directly to the public through the local press."

Leader of Thurrock Council, Cllr Rob Gledhill, said: "I would like to reassure our residents that Thurrock Council is well prepared for what could be many weeks of impacts due to the coronavirus. Not only is the council in regular contact with Public Health England and following the latest advice and guidance for social distancing and for the other services we provide, our public health team is advising all services on the impact of this virus.

"We have business continuity plans in place to ensure that critical services delivered by the council will be prioritised. We have taken the difficult decision to completely close the Thameside Theatre based on advice on social distancing given by the Government to help control the spread of the virus.

"This is a fast-changing and dynamic situation but at all times we will follow advice given by the Government as well as Public Health England and as that advice is updated we will share it and make announcements accordingly.

"This is a worrying time for residents and businesses alike but I would urge everyone to follow the Government advice.

"Thurrock has a strong community spirit and by following the Government's advice we are helping those we know are more vulnerable."

Thurrock Nub News has asked the council several times for information about how it will operates services including the borough's libraries, community hubs and council offices but we have received no response. as and when we do we will immediately pass on the important information.
